The scientific and theoretical journal of the Institute of Artificial Intelligence Problems of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine and the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine started in 1995 (Certificate of state registration of print media: Series KB №801803 on 20.11.1995). The co-founder of the journal is the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
Since 1995, periodical publication in the original language had been called «Artificial Intelligence» (Russian: «Iskusstvennyj Intellekt», in Ukrainian – «Штучний інтелект» (Shtuchnyi Intelekt). The abbreviated name was «Iskusstv. intell. (Donetsk, Print)». ISSN (print) 1561-5359, ISSN (online) 1561-5375. The languages of the publication were: Russian, Ukrainian, English.
In 2020, the name of the journal was changed to «Artificial Intelligence», «Штучний інтелект» («Shtuchnyi Intelekt»), as well as the languages of the periodical to Ukrainian and English (Certificate of state registration of print media: Series KВ №24609-14549ПР issued on 26.11.2020). The journal was assigned a Digital Object Identifier (DOI).
For 25 years, Anatolii Shevchenko has been editor-in-chief of the journal. Anatolii Ivanovych Shevchenko is director of the Institute of Artificial Intelligence Problems of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine and the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Doctor of Theology, Honored Science and Technology Figure of Ukraine, Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Professor.
In 1999, the journal was included in the List of professional scientific periodicals of Ukraine, which allowed publishing the results of thesis research for the candidate's and doctoral degree (Physical and Mathematical, Technical Sciences). Resolution of the Presidium of the HAC of Ukraine from 26.05.2010. Order of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine dated 17.10.2012 №1111 (item 5). Order of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine dated 07.10.2015 №1021 (Annex 11) «On approval of the decision of the Certifying Collegium of the Ministry on the activities of the specialized scientific councils dated 29.09.2015».

Throughout the existence of journal, its editorial board has included experts in the field of cybernetics and information technology - world-renowned scientists who provide quality independent review and selection of articles.
The editorial board strictly adheres to the regulations of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine on the requirements for periodicals which publish the main scientific results of dissertations and scientific papers of the applicants for scientific degrees and academic ranks.
The journal publishes original review articles, controversial materials and discussion papers, reports of conferences and meetings on cybernetics and systems analysis, introduction of artificial intelligence technologies in economics, public administration, defense and other areas, including materials of the International Conference «Strategy for the Development of Artificial Intelligence in Ukraine».
By the efforts of the Institute and the editorial board, during the years of its existence, the journal has published 25 volumes (90 issues), more than 3,500 scientific articles have been published (30% - papers of foreign authors).
For over 25 years, the scientific journal has published a significant number of dissertations, which contributed to the development and formation of young scientists in Ukraine. In addition to the results of scientific research of well-known leading Ukrainian and foreign scientists.
