Abstract: The authors offer an approach to constructing a multilevel ontology for the system of knowledge of the «Superhard materials (SHM)» subject domain. The complex-structure subject domain of superhard materials is examined; components and the process of development of the knowledge base are defined on the basis of the «Superhard materials (SHM)» metaontology. The authors’ modular approach to building an ontology model and its application are illustrated with a fragment of the hierarchical model of a domain named «Polycrystals of synthetic diamonds». The ontology is built as a set of modules, where each module describes terminology of a particular section of the subject domain. The authors briefly analyze the «Superhard materials» domain and describe the ontology and models of two domains – «Natural SHM» and «Synthetic SHM».
